30 [M4F] - Looking for Someone Who Feels Like a Sad Song at 2 A.M.

NSFW

I’m probably old enough to know better than to go looking for a stranger on Reddit who might eventually become the reason I stare at my phone a little too long at night. Unfortunately, knowing better has never been especially useful.

I’m 30, married, MST, 6'3", tattooed, shaved head, beard, and built somewhere between “retired emo kid who never actually retired” and “guy you’d ask to help move something heavy.” I’m working on the dad bod. It’s going about as peacefully as most prolonged sieges.

Most of the time, I’m functional. I work, handle responsibilities, pay bills, remember appointments, and participate convincingly enough in normal adult life that nobody has staged an intervention. Then the sun goes down, the music gets louder, and some deeply unhelpful part of my personality starts wondering whether there’s someone out there who could make the quiet feel a little less empty. Not fix it. Just sit in it with me. That’s probably closer to what I’m looking for.

Music has always been the easiest way into my head. Metal and metalcore make up most of the foundation, with plenty of rock and pop punk hanging around from the years when skinny jeans were somehow acceptable. But I also love Americana and bluegrass, the kind of music that sounds like somebody lost everything they loved somewhere along a two-lane highway and decided to write about it instead of recovering.

I like songs that bleed a little. Screaming vocals, ugly breakdowns, ruined relationships, dying towns, cheap motel rooms, religion, regret, grief, longing. Basically, if the singer sounds like they either want to fight God or ask Him why He stopped answering, there’s a decent chance I’m listening.

I write fantasy and horror, which probably explains the rest of me. My favorite stories are the ones where the beautiful things are already decaying. Dead gods beneath ruined temples. Kingdoms collapsing slowly enough for everyone to pretend they aren’t. Haunted roads that lead somewhere different after midnight. Saints with blood on their hands. Monsters that turn out to be gentler than the people hunting them. Lovers finding each other at exactly the wrong moment and choosing each other anyway.

I like worlds where hope exists, but it has scars. Where love isn’t clean and salvation usually costs something. Where sometimes the closest thing you get to a happy ending is two damaged people deciding not to leave.

Outside of the fictional misery, I’m into hiking, camping, gaming, movies, TV, and occasionally disappearing into the woods when civilization starts feeling too loud. I can also lose entire evenings researching something incredibly specific because apparently my brain considers “brief curiosity” a personal weakness.

Personality-wise, I’m sarcastic, affectionate, nerdy, emotionally complicated, and equipped with the kind of dark humor that occasionally makes people laugh before realizing they might have just encouraged me. I’m also significantly more sentimental than I look, which is deeply inconvenient for the aesthetic.

I remember things. The song you played constantly when you were seventeen. The name of the person who broke your heart. The stupid thing somebody said at work that made you furious. The movie you watch when everything feels wrong. The insecurity you disguised as a joke and probably assumed nobody noticed. Once I care about someone, those details tend to stick around.

That’s why I’m not particularly interested in collecting another shallow conversation that burns brightly for three days and disappears. I want something with a little weight to it. That strange connection where we start as strangers trading jokes and somehow end up becoming part of each other’s routines.

I want “good morning” to eventually mean I thought about you before the rest of the world got access to me. I want to notice something is wrong because the way you’re texting feels slightly different. I want you to know exactly which song to send when I’m disappearing into my own head. I want the flirting to become dangerous because somewhere along the way there’s actual affection underneath it.

And yes, attraction and sexuality are part of that. I’m kinky, open-minded, and infinitely more interested in tension than immediately exchanging inventories of everything we’ve ever wanted to do to another human being. I’d rather discover you slowly. Figure out what makes you blush, which compliments you pretend don’t affect you, what kind of attention makes you linger, and what you only admit when it’s late and the conversation has gotten quieter.

I like the moment where something changes. One joke goes a little too far. One message sits there for a second longer than it should. One of us says something that could technically be innocent, and both of us know damn well it wasn’t. Then there’s that little pause where we decide whether we’re going to behave. Hopefully not.

I want affection tangled up with bad intentions. Midnight conversations that absolutely should not be preserved as evidence, followed by a completely sincere “How did your meeting go?” the next morning. Someone I can corrupt and comfort in roughly equal measure. Someone who can say something filthy at 1:13 A.M. and something unexpectedly tender twelve minutes later, and somehow make both feel completely natural.

I don’t need constant communication. People have jobs, families, responsibilities, bad days, and occasionally the desire to throw their phone into a lake. But I do want effort, curiosity, and presence. I don’t want to spend every conversation performing CPR on it one dry reply at a time.

Tell me too much. Tell me what you’re currently obsessed with, what keeps you awake, what you miss, what ruined your week, which song still hits a nerve, what terrible opinion you’ll defend forever, or what part of yourself you think people consistently misunderstand. Send me the weird thought you almost deleted because it seemed like too much. Give me something real enough that I can actually know you.

Physical attraction matters too, so I prefer swapping pictures relatively early. Not immediately and not as some weird audition, but chemistry has more than one ingredient and pretending otherwise seems pointless.

I do have a weakness for women who look like they might have been somebody’s devastating MySpace crush in 2008 and simply evolved from there. Alt, goth, emo, tattoos, piercings, black clothes, heavy eyeliner, old band shirts, boots that sound vaguely threatening on hardwood floors, and the general energy of someone who owns too many candles and may or may not have a favorite cemetery. Very much my thing.

That said, aesthetics only get somebody through the door. Funny wins. Smart wins. Curious wins. Someone affectionate enough to make me soft and strange enough to keep me interested will beat a perfect aesthetic every time.

And because reality still exists outside whatever this becomes, I’m not looking to destroy anybody’s life for the sake of excitement. Discretion matters. Boundaries matter. Respect matters. Whatever exists between us should belong between us.

I want something private, like a locked room hidden somewhere inside otherwise ordinary lives. A place where we can take off the respectable versions of ourselves for a while and be darker, stranger, sweeter, needier, meaner, softer, or considerably less innocent than anybody else gets to see.

Maybe we talk for two nights and realize there’s nothing there. Maybe we become friends who occasionally say things friends absolutely should not say to each other. Maybe a month from now your name appearing on my screen changes my entire mood. Maybe we build inside jokes nobody else would understand, argue about bands like it’s a matter of national security, learn exactly where each other’s emotional landmines are, and develop a deeply irresponsible familiarity with the thoughts that only show up after midnight.

Maybe eventually one of us realizes this stopped feeling casual a while ago. There are worse tragedies.

So if you’re funny, emotionally curious, a little damaged around the edges, capable of affection, comfortable with darkness, and interested in becoming somebody’s favorite bad idea, come say hello. Just give me something better than “hey.”

Tell me something you don’t usually tell strangers. Or answer this:

It’s 2 A.M. What sad song is playing to make your eyes water?
