Why is 2d games not as widespread as 3d games?

I am a newbie. Just started learning Lua and plan to make a card game but I feel like 2d ui would be much better than something 3d. But I realised that 2d isn't much popular and was wondering why. Is it because it is harder to make?(I wouldn't know i haven't reached that lvl yet)
