First time doing brake work

Just bought a Honda Civic 2006 1.8L EX

Took it in for emissions, and they informed me that I have 3mm of brake pad remaining. They said this means my brakes are "luckily" wearing evenly, which confuses me because front pads should wear faster- and the rears were replaced 40k miles ago, unlike the fronts. Regardless, they quoted me on the spot for rotors and pads at $1300. Not doing that- regardless of whether I need the rotors, the place is a money hole.

Need advice on three subjects-

First, never worked on brakes, so I'm worried about my ability to mess this up. With minor know-how, is this a job that's easy to finish and turn out dangerous long term?

Second, the rotors were quoted for me despite them having nothing to say about them. All rotors were replaced 60k miles ago and braking capabilities have been perfectly fine since I got this car a week ago.

Finally, no idea what to buy. All the forums I've found are incredibly conflicted whereas on my Toyota forums usually had a pretty solid idea of where to get the most quality aftermarket. Any tips on what to cough up the money for would be greatly appreciated.

If the way I presented this post made you think, "Good lord he's out of his league," please let me know to bring it to a local mechanic and take it out of my wallet 😅
