Buying from Amazon and getting it to South Africa: what actually works

Amazon looks straightforward until you check the shipping options and South Africa is not on the list for half the sellers you want to buy from.

Amazon does not treat South Africa the way it treats the US, UK, or EU. Plenty of sellers block shipping here entirely. Others technically ship, but route the parcel through the postal system rather than a tracked courier, which means weeks of waiting and a customs bill that shows up only when the parcel is ready for collection.

The stores themselves are not the problem. Amazon.com, amazon.co.uk, amazon.de, amazon.ae, and the rest all carry huge ranges, often cheaper than local retail once you account for the exchange rate. The gap is what happens between checkout and your front door.

A few things worth knowing before you buy directly. Duty and 15% VAT apply to every import regardless of which Amazon store you use, calculated on the item price plus shipping plus duty combined, not just the sticker price. Amazon's own Global Shipping Programme only works with participating sellers, and even then the import fee shown at checkout is an estimate, not a final number, so adjustments can follow. Tracked courier delivery is not guaranteed either. Some sellers ship postal, which means limited visibility and a longer wait once the parcel enters the international mail system.

Full disclosure, I run Scott's Shipping Services, an import company here in SA. Our approach is to buy the item from whichever Amazon store has it (US, UK, Germany, UAE, France, Canada, Australia, Japan) at your request, then handle the courier shipping, SARS clearance, duty, VAT, and delivery ourselves. One quote before you commit, no separate bill from the courier when it lands. Most orders take 10 to 15 working days.
