Clinking gear

I recently acquired a 600HXT and have been riding it for a while. This afternoon, my bike's gearbox was clinking while I was in 8th or 9th gear. Gear box was repeatedly clinking every 5 or 6 crank rotation though it went away eventually. Has anyone experienced this? Is this normal behavior?
