Fast diagnosis? Common or sus?
Never posted on Reddit before but I am desperate for other opinions because I’m not sure how to feel.
I am 27, a stay at home mom of 3, and have dealt with treatment resistant depression my entire life. I have long suspected that it’s really untreated ADHD but haven’t been able to bring myself to take the necessary steps toward evaluation. This week I reached my breaking point. I called every single psychiatrist local to me and no one could see me in the next few weeks. My mental health was truly at an absolute LOW because of my pure inability to complete ANY necessary task without extreme difficulty. I hated myself for how incapable I was feeling (not suicidal), wanted better for my kids, and was just so anxious about not having a plan for getting my mental health in order. I was worried if I didn’t have SOME form of plan in place for mental health treatment by Monday, then I wouldn’t make it through the week alone with my kids without a mental breakdown.
Enter ZocDoc. Through them, there was an appointment available with a licensed psychiatrist next day (which was today). Desperate to start working toward something that would help me feel normal, I scheduled the appointment.
My video appointment today was 30 minutes start to finish and he did diagnose me with ADHD and prescribed me Adderall XR, 5mg and can increase if needed after 3 days. I was expecting to feel relief and validation from this diagnosis. And while I’m eager to try a medication that may finally improve my mental health, I can’t help but question the legitimacy of my evaluation? I always thought it was way more thorough, and harder to get a diagnosis. Am I oblivious to how bad my ADHD is or are the circumstances weird, I don’t know.
I completed an ASRS symptom checklist and he asked me about my mental health history and family history. That was pretty much it.
Thoughts?
