Should I get a new guitar?

I have a 40$ best choice products classical guitar that my dad bought me when I was about 8, I barely ever used it and now im learning again. The fretboard is bending presumably from years of being cramped in a storage closet. I want an electric guitar, but its very expensive and me and my dad agree I should be fairly good at guitar before I get an electric one to know im serious about this, cause I've given up guitar 3 times already. My dad doesn't just have money to spend, neither do I. Should I buy a cheap used electric guitar, a new electric guitar, a new classical maybe?
