Base Coat Primer

What if I don't have the right color primer I need? When does the base coat primer layer stop affecting the color of the top coat?

Like if all I had was black primer and I wanted to spray yellow, how could I do that without the black primer affecting the color, do I just spray it really heavy, should I use an opaque paint?
