Hosts and volunteers: is this review fair?

I recently hosted a volunteer for one month in exchange for help caring for my dogs. The experience wasn't disastrous—she was affectionate with the animals and capable of doing the work—but there were repeated boundary issues, and I've decided I wouldn't host her again.

I've drafted the review below. Before I post it, I'd particularly like feedback from people who have both hosted and volunteered. Are my expectations reasonable? Is anything here unfair, irrelevant, or overly personal? And if you were a prospective host, would this information be useful to you?

------------------------------------------------------------------

Joanne stayed with me for one month helping with my dogs. She was decent with the animals and capable of doing the work, but unfortunately I would not host her again.

My main concerns were respect for courteous behavior and household boundaries.

Almost immediately after arriving, Joanne asked whether a man she was romantically involved with could come to my home at night. Later, she also asked whether he could have access to my home so that he could come over to shower. These requests made me uncomfortable because I had agreed to host Joanne, not to provide access to my home and facilities to someone who was not part of the volunteer arrangement.

There were problems involving food and shared household resources. Joanne took food from my home to give to another volunteer who had already left, without asking me first, telling me only afterward, “I hope you don't mind.” By that point, of course, I had no opportunity to say yes or no. On another occasion, I found her in my kitchen in the middle of the night using a flashlight and going through my refrigerator looking for additional helpings of dessert which she particularly liked, again without asking. She had her own refrigerator and was provided with money to pay for breakfast items. These incidents made me uncomfortable.

Joanne also left her own dog at my home several times when she went out, without first asking whether I was willing to care for her. Since her dog could not be left outside unattended without barking, I effectively became responsible for her care. This turned the volunteer arrangement on its head: I had agreed to host Joanne in exchange for help, not to be involuntarily recruited as a volunteer dog-sitter for her.

There were smaller issues that contributed to the overall experience as well. A household bowl that was destroyed by her dog was not replaced despite my asking, and communal food money that was supposed to be kept in a designated wallet was not returned there. When I asked about replacing the bowl, the matter was treated jokingly rather than resolved.

I provide volunteers with accommodation, food and considerable trust, and I need guests who respect household resources, communicate before taking or giving away food, and take responsibility for their own belongings and animals using common courtesy.

Throughout the month, I came away with the impression that Joanne's external social life and romantic relationship were the most important parts of her stay. That ultimately left me wondering why she chose a volunteer exchange rather than simply renting accommodation, since the volunteer commitment often seemed secondary to the activities she wanted to pursue while here.

Early in her stay, Joanne asked to stay for an additional month even though I already had volunteers confirmed for that period. She framed the request as wanting to be available in case one of them became sick. As the month progressed, however, it became increasingly apparent that she was very invested in the social and romantic life she had established locally. In retrospect, I found the suggestion disingenuous. Staying another month would have provided Joanne with continued free accommodation and food while allowing her to remain close to the lifestyle she was enjoying, yet the request was presented as though the extension would primarily benefit me.

As I write this review, Joanne is out at a social event while her dog remains at my home, once again without her having asked whether I was willing to care for her. Earlier this evening, while preparing to leave for the event, she accidentally let one of my dogs escape. After unsuccessfully trying to find her, Joanne contacted me because she was concerned about being late for the event and ultimately left without recovering my dog. Fortunately, my dog returned home safely on her own. Joanne then left her own dog behind for me to care for. For me, this incident encapsulates many of the concerns I experienced during her stay: her social plans took priority while responsibility for the resulting problems was left to me.

Joanne may be better suited to a more casual hosting environment with fewer expectations around basic courtesy. Based on my experience, I would not host her again.  I do wish her well.
