What Should You Check in a Custom Mahjong Sample Before Approving Production?
If you’re developing a custom Mahjong set, getting the first physical sample is exciting — but approving it based only on the artwork can be an expensive mistake.
Here are the things I’d check before approving production:
1. Exact tile dimensions
Measure the length, width and thickness rather than relying only on the specification.
2. Weight and feel
Mahjong is very tactile. Two tiles that look almost identical in photos can feel completely different when played.
3. Artwork clarity
Look closely at small numbers, fine lines and detailed illustrations.
4. Color consistency
Compare the actual tile with your intended colors, especially the tile backs and any large solid-color areas.
5. Edge finishing
Check every side and corner. The tiles will constantly touch each other during play.
6. Tile count
Confirm the complete configuration rather than assuming the factory knows which Mahjong variation you’re producing.
7. Rack compatibility
If your set includes racks, test the actual sample tiles in them.
8. Packaging fit
Don’t approve the final insert or box dimensions before confirming the production-size tiles.
I think the biggest mistake is treating a sample as something that’s only meant to confirm the artwork. It’s really a small-scale test of the entire product.
For anyone who has ordered a custom set before, what did you notice only after receiving the physical tiles?
