NCP 7.0 | Sonography Canada | Applies to Generalist, Cardiac and Vascular Examinations | New Competencies Explained.🔥 What Does “Personal Boundary” Actually Mean? NCP 7.0 introduces competency 2.3.1, requiring sonographers to maintain appropriate personal boundaries.

A professional boundary is the limit separating a legitimate healthcare relationship from an inappropriate personal relationship.

For example:

Appropriate

“I understand you're worried. I'll explain what will happen during the examination.”

Potentially inappropriate

“Don't worry. I'll personally make sure everything is okay.”

The second statement may create excessive personal involvement.

A boundary doesn't mean becoming cold or distant.

It means keeping the relationship within your professional role.

The boundary can involve:

  • physical contact;
  • emotional involvement;
  • sexual behaviour;
  • financial interactions;
  • social relationships;
  • electronic communication;
  • confidentiality.

And NCP 7.0 specifically applies this competency to:

Generalist + Cardiac + Vascular.

Exam thinking

Don't ask:

“Was the sonographer being nice?”

Ask:

“Did the interaction remain professionally appropriate?”
