Once people misunderstand you online, is there really any way to correct it?

I’ve been thinking about how, on the internet, once a misunderstanding starts spreading, people seem to automatically interpret everything in the worst possible way, and it becomes almost impossible to correct it afterward.
I experienced this myself. I tried really hard to explain and defend myself, but only one person seemed to agree with me. Everyone else had already decided that I was a bad person and started treating me like one.
The strange thing is that what they were accusing me of didn’t actually apply to me at all, so I wasn’t personally hurt by the accusations themselves. What bothered me was how quickly people made assumptions and kept interpreting everything in the worst possible way.
It made me wonder: is this just something you can’t avoid online? Are you basically expected to explain everything from beginning to end in a huge wall of text just to prevent people from misunderstanding you?
And even when I did explain things in detail, people still added things that I never said or did and used those assumptions against me. So at that point, what was I actually supposed to do?
I’m genuinely wondering what I could have done differently, because it felt like once people had decided what kind of person I was, nothing I said could change their minds.
