The Wikipedia article for Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath references the book selling 300000 copes in the Soviet Union. How was a book that makes such heavy use of accents translated?

The Grapes of Wrath - a fantastic book, by the way, follows the journey of a family of farmers from Oklahoma who migrate to California during the Dust Bowl of the 30s. Virtually all of the dialogue is heavily accented and often intentionally misspelt/phonetically spelt. "Something" becomes "somepin", "figured" becomes "figgered", and so on.

How was this translated into Russian and conveyed in a way that retained the spirit and cultural identity of the original text? Are Russian/Soviet copies of The Grapes of Wrath intentionally misspelt in the same way English copies are?

Thanks all
