Friendship or romance?

It's so confusing in this story to friendzone people. Like I want to be a good friend to Rudy but don't want romance with him. I keep taking his diamond options though otherwise I feel like their friendship won't be as strong.

Is there no way to know how to keep being strong friends without romance being a part of it?
