When people talk about the old web, it’s usually visitor counters, `UNDER CONSTRUCTION` GIFs, guestbooks and backgrounds that hurt your eyes.

I remember the banners too.

They blinked, yelled in all caps, promised free money and didn’t care whether anyone thought they looked good. Now we look at screenshots of those sites like they’re museum pieces. I wanted something people could actually mess with.

So I made ADWARTISE.

It’s a shared 25×25 canvas. Pick a rectangle of 1–21 cells, upload an image, GIF or video, and add a link if you want.

Empty cells cost $1. If someone already occupies a cell, you can take it for its current price + $1. Cover their banner, move in next door, answer it with another image, or slowly eat it one cell at a time.

Maybe it turns into an actual banner war. Maybe people team up. Maybe nobody touches it and my two demo ads just keep arguing with each other.

Old ads aren’t deleted. Every previous layer, purchase and price stays in the public history.

Right now both banners are mine. There haven’t been any buyers yet. The blue `ADWARTISE SUCKS` banner is already creeping over the red one.

I honestly don’t know what the canvas will become if people pick this up. That’s the experiment.

Does it feel like a living piece of the old web, or like a 2026 website wearing a pixel font? Be brutal.

Enjoy adWARtising.

I got tired of admiring the old web, so I built a place to make it ugly again
