Hi guys

3 days ago I shared my [snapshot browser tool over in r/zfs](https://www.reddit.com/r/zfs/comments/1vz9pv3/zfs_snapshot_explorer_a_lightweight_web_ui_to/). Since then I refactored the backend architecture to support multiple filesystem providers and released version [2.0.0 as "Universal Snapshot Explorer"](https://github.com/NicolasGoeddel/universal-snapshot-explorer/releases/tag/v2.0.0).

For those who haven't seen it: It's a lightweight web UI in Python using FastAPI and native Javascript that shows an interactive timeline for each file and directory, so you can see at a glance when files were created, modified or deleted across your snapshot history.

Here's what's new:

* Native Snapper support: It parses `info.xml` metadata directly to extract exact timestamps, descriptions and user context.
* Mount & subvolume detection: I reads `/proc/mounts` to properly distinguish nested subvolumes (e.g. `@home` inside `@`) instead of incorrectly inheriting parent snapshot timelines
* Runs without `btrfs-progs` in unprivileged containers as a fallback (by scanning standard `.snapshots` directories)

I've put a lot of work into keeping the codebase clean with strict typing checked by BasedPyRight, a test suite, Python 3.14 with future annotations, ruff checks and code coverage.

>**Transparency notice:** I used Gemini Flash in the Antigravity IDE to give that project a nice frontend because I am not good at working with CSS and modern HTML technologies. I am mainly a professional software engineer for Python and therefore designed and developed the backend and core of the project. The git history does not represent the work of last year because I truncated it to get rid of personal artifacts that I used to test everything. I published the project when I was satisfied with the look and performance.

Let me know what you think, especially if you use different subvolume layouts or run into any Btrfs-specific edge cases, or just anything else!
