Not updating fic with new epub file

I downloaded a fanfic as an epub file. When they updated with a new chapter I downloaded a new epub file on my phone and tried to add it to the library, hoping it would just update the current file but it didn't do anything. It didn't update the old file and it didn't become a new "book". Do I have to delete the old epub first for it to work?
