Does Mefenamic acid help you with period cramps? What dose do you take?

Medications and pain management

Hi guys, it’s my first time posting in this channel as I’ve been digging on some info regarding mefenamic acid.

I’m 25F and have struggled with period cramps my entire life. From throwing up, to fainting in public, you name it. Some days I can barely walk during the first 1-2 days of my period. Although this does not happen during every period, say 7-8/12 periods a year will be bad cramps.

I have been taking medication for as long as I remember. I used to take a different type of period pill (nospa) until I was 22 as it stopped working even when I took more, as it wasn’t working I went to see a new gyne back in July 2025, shared with her about my period pain and symptoms - she ended up prescribing to me mefenamic acid 500mg.

I started taking it in September of 2025, and it seemed to have worked for the first few months. However for the last few months, it has not seemed to work at all - I take it when I feel the slightest hint of cramps, but it doesn’t end up helping me and for the next 2.5 hours I spend laying in bed dying. It has gotten bad that I took an additional dose on top of it after an hour of it not working, and still ended up rolling in bed from pain.

FYI my gyne has not diagnosed me with PCOS or endometriosis even tho I’ve previously been suspected for these. I find my gyne is dismissive and aim to change my doctor.

Does anyone else have a similar experience and what were the next steps you took? Thank you and any advice is appreciated.
