What is it about penpals and postcards that keeps people coming back?
There’s something really different about having a penpal compared to regular online conversations. With most digital communication, everything is instant. You send something, get a reply, and move on. But with penpals and postcards, there’s this little gap in between. You actually have time to wonder what the other person is going to say, when their letter will arrive, what postcard they’ll choose, or what stamp they’ll put on it.
Even something as simple as receiving a postcard can feel surprisingly personal. Someone had to choose it, write something on it, address it, and actually send it. I think that’s part of what makes collecting postcards interesting too. Over time, they become little reminders of people, places, conversations, and moments.
It’s interesting how something so old fashioned still feels more meaningful than a lot of modern digital communication. I’ve always wondered whether people are drawn more to the actual postcards and collecting aspect, or to the anticipation and slower connection that comes with having a penpal.
Would love to hear how other people experience it.
