Lighting options for a paved brick wall without making it look harsh
For a paved brick wall, I would start by deciding whether the goal is safe circulation, highlighting the brick texture, or adding a soft boundary around a path. Those goals call for different placements.
Small fixtures mounted near the wall can create pools of light, but they may emphasize uneven brickwork and expose conduit or cable runs. A ground mounted spotlight aimed across the surface can bring out texture, though the beam should be kept low enough to avoid shining into nearby windows or people's eyes. If the wall is part of a walkway, low level path lighting may be more useful than aiming a bright beam directly at the bricks.
The practical issues are mounting method, drainage, cable protection, access for maintenance, and whether the fixture can be repositioned without damaging the paving. For solar fixtures, avoid placing the panel where the wall, trees, or eaves shade it for much of the day. Testing the beam angle with a temporary light before drilling or lifting bricks can prevent a lot of rework.
