We see law firms make the same marketing mistakes again and again. The good news: most do not require a six-figure marketing budget, just intent.

Fix the basics and every marketing dollar works harder. You get more control, a pipeline you can understand and predict, and enough knowledge to hire experts when needed – while spotting when “strategy” is just an AI PowerPoint built to justify the retainer.

# The invisible waste

# (The mistakes firms don't even realize they're making.)

.

**1. Paying for leads nobody answers**

48% of calls to law firms go unanswered.

If you pay for ads, directories or SEO and then ignore the phone, your marketing is working. You are simply setting fire to the result.

Before buying more leads, fix intake.

.

**2. Not knowing where clients come from**

Most firms cannot say where their last ten clients came from.

Only [20% of firms receive regular marketing performance reports](https://www.americanbar.org/groups/law_practice/resources/tech-report/2023/2023-websites-and-marketing-techreport/).

Without tracking, the budget is guesswork. You may be funding the channel that produced no clients and cutting the one that produced eight.

Record the source of every inquiry and every signed matter. It does not need to be sophisticated. It does need to happen.

.

**3. Measuring things that do not pay salaries**

Traffic, impressions and followers are not clients.

Two hundred website visitors converting at 10% produce the same number of inquiries as 2,000 visitors converting at 1%. The bigger traffic number looks better in a report. It does not make the phone ring more often.

Measure qualified inquiries, consultations, signed matters and revenue.

# (Deliberate choices that feel reasonable but compound badly.)

**.**

**4. Depending on one referral source**

Referrals are excellent until your best referrer retires, moves or finds another favourite firm.

If one or two relationships feed the whole pipeline, you do not have a growth strategy. You have a single point of failure.

Keep the referrals. Build another route to market.

.

**5. Treating the website like a brochure from 2019**

Your website is the only major marketing asset you fully control.

Yet many firms still show departed lawyers, outdated practice areas and no obvious way to make contact.

You do not need a redesign every year. You do need an accurate website that tells the right clients, quickly, that they are in the right place.

.

**6. Chasing platforms because competitors use them**

A firm owner sees a competitor posting on X or LinkedIn and panics.

The useful question is not, “Should we be on LinkedIn?” It is, “What does our client do when they realise they need a lawyer?”

For many practice areas, they search. They do not scroll hopefully through social media waiting for counsel to appear.

Spend where the intent is.

.

**Before spending more, fix the leaks**

More leads will not fix unanswered calls. More traffic will not fix a weak website. More platforms will not fix the absence of a strategy.

The cheapest source of growth may be the demand you already paid for.
