Can you get flashbacks if you can’t get an earworm? Or, the nuance of aphantasia…

Back in the days of curious cases Hannah and Adam talked about aphantasia, this genuinely blew my mind at the time as it explained why radio jingles were a thing!

As someone who has both complete audio and visual aphantasia I’ve always been curious…

Can people with audio aphantasia ever get schizophrenia or ptsd flashbacks?

Also, when you have counselling therapists will often talk about identifying the thought that comes into your head, when you have no internal monologue, this feels genuinely impossible yet is also one of the identifiers for depression etc. How does this work when you don’t have them? Has there ever been any sort of research on what sort of therapy can work for somebody with a completely silent brain, given meditation to relax doesn’t really work when you can’t picture yourself somewhere, and CBT isn’t great when you don’t have phrases to reframe…?

As a child, I was always told to show my working out, but had no idea how I knew what the answer was, it just was. Can people who don’t have aphantasia actually mentally create a whiteboard so that they are writing the Maths in their head and so can just transcribe it from their mental picture?
