Need advice of how to navigate staying in the hotel without insulting in laws

My in laws recently moved to a new house and my husband and I planing to visit them for a couple of days. We living pretty far from each other so my plan was to fly to the nearest airport, rent a car and stay in the hotel, because they house is a mess after move and they don’t have a good bed for us to sleep on. I was thinking that it would not be a big deal, so I casually mentioned that we’re planning to stay in the hotel close by and got a very clear response “no, you don’t”. As a side note, my in laws definitely a book example of narcissist and enabler so I knew things would not go smooth but here’s the thing - whenever they visit us they sometimes staying at our place and sometimes at the hotel. It’s been like that for years, and I genuinely liked those times when we stayed separately because it was so much easier to know you can have your personal space. So I decided to try it and for the first time visiting them, stay in the hotel. My obvious mistake was the fact that at the time I talked with them by myself, without my husband and learned my lesson. After our conversation I booked the hotel and planning on telling them about it either with my husband being the messenger or just both of us on the phone

I really in need of advice because I’m not sure what would be the best way of handling this so if somebody had a similar experience I would love to hear it. I’m tired of playing a yes-girl to everything my in laws wants and little by little working on standing more firm to them, conversation and situations like this scare the hell out of me still. Does it ever get better?
