AITA If I tell a long time guy friend his wife lied about his late mom?
I haven't done it yet, and the couple I speak of, do not look at Reddit. I am deciding if I should let a good guy friend from 90s, know that his now wife, lied to him about his mother.
The backstory is this, I met him, we will call him T, in 1990, through his best friend, we will call him J. He was best friends with J since childhood, and they were like brothers. His best friend J and my sister, got married in December of 1990. We will call my sister C.
Now being best friends, J and T knew each other's parents. My sister, now being married to J, was familiar with T's mother and stepdad. We all used to hang out and party together.
Now T met a girl, we will call her K, and K was hooked immediately. K was young, came from a very abusive home, and T was her white knight. She a teenager, and fell hard. She was going to keep him, no matter what. I remember this when we hung out.
T, with J and C, brought K to meet his mom and stepdad. My sister told me the interactions. The mom didn't like the pushy teen, but was polite, and felt pity for the abused girl. She did a few things to accommodate T and the teen K, but it was out of pity. My sister was there, talked to the mom privately, and that the mom told my sister, she did NOT like the too young a girl with a temper for her son. She hoped he would move on to a girl closer to his age, and more mature. Unfortunately the mom never had the chance to tell him that.
A short time after that, T lost his mom to a tragic car accident. He was devastated, absolutely crushed by losing his mom. It's something he has never really gotten over.
T and K got married 6 years later, when she got pregnant. I remember being around and K describing how T's mom adored her, and wanted them married. My sister C said at that time, out of earshot of K, that wasn't true, the mom didn't like her. I didn't understand what she meant, and asked about it. C said that T's mom told her, when K wasn't around, she didn't like that girl and K was lying. At that time, T and K seemed happy, so no one said anything.
Fast forward, we are all in our 50s now. I saw him on FB, and added him. We talked about things and old times. I am no longer speaking to my sister, and he quit talking to his childhood best friend years before. My sister and his bestie divorced in 2014. I noticed he was constantly apologizing publicly on his FB to his wife, for like a month. I asked him about it, and he said he started drinking heavily and he told off his wife. He quit drinking and now wants to make it up to her.
I looked back on his and her FBs, and apparently he blew up on her 50th bday! Yikes! Mind you, I know she is abusive too, like her childhood family she grew up in. She is still immature. I noticed all three of the kids moved out the second they were 18 from the FB accounts of them. I even asked about them on FB, and no reply. Thought and felt something was terribly wrong in this scenario.
Another month later T is still posting love memes, neverending love memes, be together forever....other friends were saying things to hint it was uncomfortable to see this everyday. I PMd T saying it was creepy and maybe therapy would be a lot better than public humiliation. I said I was his friend first, and he had some reason to do what he did, and she isn't perfect either. He thanked me, and it stopped...for a few days. I noticed K blocked me, when he started back up with the love memes. Her responses to his memes were weird and mostly focused on her, and how he is working harder for her and them. She usually has her first, and then, them.
Then some old posts popped up, and I saw she had some long, drawn out confessional of how T and her met...the whole story, her version. Wow. Very publicly, she has in detail, her horrific childhood, the beatings, and how she nearly passed after being hit in the head and face with a weapon. She suffered a broken arm from this particular beating. How she met T around that time, and he was everything she ever wanted, she told him everything about her horrible home life . T was such a gentleman and took care of her. How she moved in with him very quickly after meeting. How she met his mom....and this is where, what my sister said years ago, hit home.
K said his mom told her she would love it if they got married and to marry on T's moms birthday. She would be so happy because T's mom wanted them married because she loved K. After the mom's death is when she told him what his mom said. He didn't believe her, his mom hated all his girlfriends. He thought getting married on his mom's bday was weird. K convinced him she was special and they were meant to be together...his mom said so.
Long story short, to get him, she lied about his mom. She used his love for his mother that passed when he was young, to bind him to her....falsely.
He is struggling with life with this woman. They raised three kids, he has provided a wonderful life, a home, vehicles, trips, pets....he is a really great guy. He isn't happy and it shows. K is controlling and manipulating. There are many red flags. 🚩
Now I know am the not the one who spoke with his mom...he would need to speak to my sister. Back then he wasn't ready to hear the truth, but he seems like he is now. Give him my sister's information, and he can decide with all the information. So Reddit, would I be the AH to tell him the way to get the truth about his mom's true opinion of his wife?
