What was alcohol/drinking like in colonial America?

Was it stronger or weaker than it today? What was the popular drink? What did they mostly consist of and when would they usually drink? How typical was it for women to drink? I thought I remember reading the Founding Fathers would drink a lot so I’m just curious.
