How is praying supposed to feel?

so I started doing research on Hellenism a couple days ago and was told the best way to learn was via practice

I have a phobia of car crashes so I thought to myself travel falls under (not sure if I should or should not call him Lord?) Hermes jurisdiction so for the past few nights I've basically set up a candle and said smthing along the lines of "please make sure I don't die traveling tomorrow" (much more polite)

It feels very reassuring and soothing? but am I doing it wrong? am I supposed to feel like awestruck? or is this how I know im getting the message through
