Parenting advice needed - 7 month old baby’s first microagression?
I am white and my husband is mixed - half white, a quarter black, and a quarter Mexican, making our daughter 75% white 12.5% black and 12.5% Mexican. That being said, she is only 7 months old and completely white passing as of now. Her features are still developing and anyone who saw her without her dad would not assume she was mixed.
Recently, a friend’s husband asked me if I thought her hair was going to be “nappy”. His use of that word caught me so off guard (he’s white) and made me feel kind of uncomfortable. Also my daughter has a ton of hair… so you can see that it’s straight. It felt like a microagression towards my daughter and husband.
It made me realize I need to be better prepared to advocate for my daughter. Luckily she’s too young to understand this time but the thought of someone else’s ignorance making her feel less about herself makes me sick.
Hoping to get advice on…
Any suggestions on how to respond to these kind of comments when I don’t necessarily have the right to have an opinion on what’s okay vs not okay? Obviously a lot of things are a no brainer but is there such thing as like “white-splaining”??
How to navigate this when I don’t know how my daughter will end up choosing to identify?
Does anyone with a similar experience as a mixed race person have advice or examples of how your parents helped you in similar situations?
Also, for anyone who has similar predominantly white heritage.. what do you usually select for race when filling out forms?
