i dont understand m1 trading

i swear to god this crap is so frustrating like, i just want to actually win a few of these but it seems like everytime i do im somehow out of range for mine but IN range for someone elses. i vs my friend who has 3k kills pretty consistantly and i can literally never land a single m1 on them ever.
how on earth does this mechanic work
i block their move and i just cant get an m1 in somebody please tell me how to get better at this nonsense it makes no sense and i dont want to listen to an ai dub youtube short explain it awfully
