What actually calmed our colicky baby, the full list from someone who survived it
Our first baby had colic and the crying could go for hours. Nothing prepares you for it. Posting the stuff that actually helped us in case it saves another parent at 3am.
Starting with what helped most:
-
The colic hold. Baby face down along my forearm, head near my elbow, gentle pats on the back. This calmed her faster than anything else.
-
Warm bath, then a gentle tummy massage and bicycling her legs toward her belly to move the gas.
-
White noise, loud, close, and constant. A hair dryer sound got us through more nights than I want to admit.
-
Slowing feeds down and keeping her upright for a while after, which cut down the screaming that seemed tied to gas.
-
A warm herbal baby tea before the worst evening stretch. We used the Secrets of Tea baby one after checking with our pediatrician first, and the fussy window got shorter for us. Please run anything you give a baby past your own pediatrician before trying it.
None of it was an instant fix. Some evenings were still brutal. But stacking these together turned hours of crying into something we could actually get through.
What worked for the rest of you? Especially curious what helped during the evening witching hour.
