Rant

I honestly never thought I would be writing something like this, but life has a funny way of taking you somewhere completely different from where you originally imagined yourself being. My name is Danielle, and I originally lived in the United States, but I eventually made the decision to move to Serbia and start a completely different chapter of my life here.

The reason I originally came to Serbia was actually someone very important to me. I met my ex boyfriend here, and what started as something I never expected eventually became one of the most meaningful relationships I have experienced in my life. Through that relationship, I discovered so many things about myself that I probably would not have learned if I had stayed where I was. I experienced a completely different culture, different way of living, different people, different traditions, and honestly a completely different version of myself.

Our relationship was not perfect, obviously, because no relationship ever is, but there were so many beautiful and genuine moments that I will always appreciate. He was someone who made Serbia feel less foreign to me. Suddenly I had a person who could explain things I did not understand, introduce me to places I would never have discovered alone, and make this country feel a little more like home.

Eventually, however, things between us changed. Last year we broke up, and honestly, that was one of the strangest periods of my life. It is one thing to lose a relationship, but it is another thing when that relationship was also one of the biggest reasons you decided to completely change your life and move to another country.

For a while, I genuinely questioned what I was supposed to do next. I had built so much of my new life around the relationship, and suddenly I had to figure out who I was in Serbia without that person beside me.

But surprisingly, I decided to stay.

I could have gone back to the United States and returned to everything I already knew. I could have convinced myself that Serbia was only a chapter connected to my ex and that there was no reason for me to remain here anymore. But something inside me told me that would be unfair to myself.

Serbia had already given me so much beyond that relationship. I had grown here. I had become more independent, more mature, more patient and more willing to experience things outside of what I already knew. I had discovered parts of myself that I probably would never have discovered otherwise.

So I decided that I wanted to stay and find out what my life could look like here without the relationship that originally brought me.

And that has been both beautiful and incredibly difficult.

I am still learning the language, and I will be completely honest about that because sometimes I probably sound like I am trying to put together a sentence using five different languages at once. There are moments when I understand what someone is saying perfectly and then completely forget how to respond. There are also moments when I want to participate in a conversation but feel nervous because I am afraid I will say something completely wrong.

I know learning a language takes time, and I am trying my best, but it can still make you feel isolated sometimes. Even when you are surrounded by people, there is a strange feeling that comes from not being able to express your personality exactly the way you normally would.

That is probably one of the biggest reasons I am making this post.

Since the breakup, I have started realizing how strange loneliness can feel when you are living somewhere that once felt so connected to another person. Novi Sad is beautiful, and I genuinely enjoy being here, but sometimes even the nicest place can feel lonely when you do not have the right people around you.

I do not want this post to sound like I am sitting here desperately looking for someone to replace my ex, because that is absolutely not what I want. I think some relationships are meant to become part of your history, and I can appreciate what mine taught me without trying to recreate it with somebody else.

What I want now is something much simpler.

I would love to meet people who are genuine, kind, spontaneous and actually interested in getting to know each other naturally. It could start with friendship. It could be someone to explore Novi Sad with, grab coffee with, walk around the city with, talk about completely random things with, or simply have someone to message when you feel like talking.

Maybe it eventually becomes a close friendship. Maybe there is chemistry and it becomes something romantic. Maybe we simply meet, have a few nice conversations and go our separate ways. I honestly do not want to force anything.

I just want real connection.

I think that is something I have started appreciating much more as I have gotten older. I am not interested in collecting hundreds of superficial conversations or having people around me just for the sake of saying that I have people around me. I would rather have a few people who genuinely care, who can be honest with me, who can laugh with me, and who do not disappear the moment life becomes slightly inconvenient.

I also think living in another country has made me appreciate small things much more. Having someone invite you somewhere, showing you a place you have never been, explaining a Serbian expression that makes absolutely no sense to you, sharing food, walking around the city without having a specific destination, or simply sitting somewhere and talking for hours can mean much more than people realize.

Those are the kinds of moments I am hoping to find again.

I am not pretending that moving to Serbia has been some perfect fairytale. There have been confusing days, lonely days, frustrating days and plenty of moments where I wondered whether I had made the right decision. But there have also been beautiful days that reminded me why I stayed.

I think there is something incredibly valuable about choosing to remain somewhere even after the original reason for coming there disappears. It forces you to discover whether you actually belong there on your own terms.

That is what I am trying to do now.

I want to build my own life here, rather than having Serbia always be connected in my mind to one relationship. I want to make my own memories, discover my own favorite places, meet my own people and eventually be able to look around Novi Sad and feel that this is my life too.

Maybe that sounds a little sentimental, but it is genuinely how I feel.

So if you are somewhere around Novi Sad and you are also interested in meeting someone new, I would genuinely love to hear from you. I am open to friendships, conversations, exploring the city, discovering new places, sharing interests, or simply getting to know someone without putting unnecessary expectations on it.

And if something more naturally develops from that, I am not going to pretend I would not be happy about it. I would absolutely love to eventually find a healthy and spontaneous relationship again, but I want it to happen naturally. I want two people to actually enjoy each other's company before worrying about labels, expectations or what everything is supposed to become.

I think I have learned enough from my past to know that relationships should not feel like something you have to force into existence. The best connections are usually the ones where you can simply be yourself and allow things to develop.

So here I am, still learning Serbian, still figuring out my life, still discovering Novi Sad, and trying to build something new out of a chapter that I originally thought would end very differently.

Maybe there is someone reading this who is in a similar situation. Maybe you moved somewhere new and know exactly how strange it feels to start over. Maybe you are simply looking for a new friend. Maybe you are also hoping to meet someone who wants something genuine.

Whatever the case may be, feel free to say hello.

I promise I am much less complicated in conversation than this ridiculously long post makes me sound.

Thank you if you actually made it this far and took the time to read everything. I genuinely appreciate it.

And wherever you are, I am sending you all the kind and sweet hugs in the world because you absolutely deserve them.

Have a beautiful day, everyone!!!
