Too early in my career to be this burnt out
Hello! I’ve been practicing for about 4.5 years and I need some advice and to vent.
I started my first year working in OP for an ALF/ILF/memory care and I was a new grad and the only OT between 2 facilities, this company had a mentorship program but my mentor was a state away and our communication was often lagged from day to day just because of our work flows conflicting which made this position feel very overwhelming for me, but manageable.
I then met my husband and relocated states where I worked in an OP peds clinic for about 3 years. This facility was privately owned and we had some temporary PRN OTs who provided some guidance, but would eventually quit and I developed a lot of my skills and treatment ability through my own research. Due to finances, life changes, burnout and realizing the minimal growth the clinic had to offer, I began to apply to other jobs once again.
I started a position with HH 3 months ago, as I did a clinical rotation in HH and really enjoyed it. I’m currently the most unhappy I’ve ever been in my life or in my career. I’ve been told many times to “give it 6 months, everyone hates it at first” so I’m trying my best to push through, ask questions, and trying to be a good therapist. Scheduling often takes me multiple hours a night to get responses or to fill spots if people have appointments, are unavailable, hospitalized etc. I’m also coming home with work every night that also takes a considerable amount of time. I am writing orders and calling doctors because despite making well over a 30 unit/week requirement, I’m often having excessive amounts of evals-that even if I was the most efficient therapist in the world- could not possibly see in a week, especially with the distance between my 2 territories. I do have a coworker who I ask questions regularly but try to keep them HCHB related because when I’ve asked clinical questions before (because I worked in OP peds for a long time and haven’t addressed this population or some of the diagnoses I encounter) I’ve been met with “…I just know how to treat that.”
I don’t know if maybe I should have found jobs earlier in my career with more mentorship/support so that I could navigate this better, if the setting just isn’t for me, or if I’m having imposter syndrome. Maybe all of the above. I just know that I feel like I’m failing at every career turn I make. But I would really love some advice as to how to further clinically develop, advice on transitioning between populations/settings, and how to manage burn out.
