B — Bhil Tribe of India 🇮🇳

Continuing my A–Z series on the major tribal communities of India, today’s tribe is the Bhil, one of the largest tribal communities in the Indian subcontinent.

📍 Region: Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra

🗣️ Language: Bhili — an Indo-Aryan language spoken in several dialects.

👥 Population: According to the 2011 Census, around 17 million people belong to the Bhil community, making them one of the largest tribal communities in India.

👗 Traditional Clothing:

• Men: Dhoti, kurta and safa (traditional headgear), along with ornaments such as tabiz worn around the neck.

• Women: Ghagra, choli and odhani.

🌿 What makes Bhils unique?

Bhil society is traditionally organized into “septs”, based on territorial and ancestral lineages. Many Bhil communities also have strong traditional beliefs and religious taboos concerning nature. In particular, certain septs maintain strict taboos against felling trees, reflecting the importance of forests and nature in their cultural and spiritual life.

🎉 Festivals & Traditions:

• Bhagoria: A vibrant festival associated with dancing, music and traditional matchmaking.

• Gavari: A traditional 40-day folk theatre and ritual tradition associated with the worship of Gauri.

• Agricultural & nature traditions: Various Bhil rituals are connected with agriculture, forests and nature worship.

💃 Traditional Dance & Performing Arts:

• Talwar Dance: A warrior-themed dance showcasing martial skills and solidarity with Bhil warriors.

• Ghoomar: The dance is widely associated with Rajasthan and has historical links to the Bhil community.

The Bhil community has a rich cultural heritage of art, music, dance, nature-based traditions and oral history, which continues to shape the cultural identity of western and central India.
