If you are shopping for a Roku, the good news is that all current Roku players give you the familiar, easy Roku interface. The real choice comes down to your TV resolution, Wi‑Fi quality, budget, and whether you need premium features like Dolby Vision, Ethernet, USB playback, improved TV audio, or 4K capabilities.

**The most commonly recommended and broadly appealing devices generally fall in this order:**

# 1. Roku Streaming Stick Plus

This is probably the best fit for the average person with a regular 4K television and decent Wi‑Fi.

**Pros**

* Affordable 4K HDR streaming.
* Small stick that hides behind the TV.
* Can usually be powered from the TV’s USB port, so there is less cable clutter.
* Simple setup and a remote that controls TV power and volume.
* Good choice for bedrooms, guest rooms, wall-mounted TVs, and travel.

**Cons**

* No Dolby Vision support.
* No Ethernet port.
* No USB port for local media.
* Not as strong for difficult Wi‑Fi locations as the Streaming Stick 4K.

# 2. Roku Streaming Stick 4K

For most people who want the best balance of price, video quality, and connection reliability, this is the safest Roku recommendation.

**Pros**

* Supports 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision.
* Includes Roku’s longer-range Wi‑Fi setup, which can help when the router is far from the television or walls weaken the signal.
* Compact stick design stays out of sight behind the TV.
* Excellent for modern 4K televisions.
* Easy remote setup with TV power and volume control.

**Cons**

* No wired Ethernet connection.
* No USB port for local files.
* Not ideal for someone who needs a true wired connection, extensive home-theater features, or a premium remote.
* Direct Bluetooth headphone support is more limited than on the Ultra; phone-based private listening through the Roku app is often the workaround.

# 3. Roku Streaming Stick (HD)

This is the low-cost Roku for older televisions and basic setups.

**Pros**

* Cheapest current Roku option.
* Very simple to install.
* Compact and portable.
* A good fit for 720p or 1080p TVs.
* Useful for a guest room, kitchen, garage, RV, travel setup, or an older second television.
* Supports voice search and basic TV controls through the remote.

**Cons**

* No 4K.
* No HDR, Dolby Vision, or HDR10+.
* Basic Wi‑Fi hardware compared with the newer 4K sticks and Ultra.
* Not the best choice if you plan to replace the television with a 4K model soon.

# 4. Roku Ultra

The Ultra is Roku’s premium box and the best option for power users, home theaters, and difficult network situations.

**Pros**

* Roku’s fastest standalone player.
* Supports 4K, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos.
* Ethernet port for the most stable internet connection.
* Wi‑Fi 6 support.
* USB port for supported local video, music, and photo playback.
* Bluetooth headphone support.
* Premium rechargeable Voice Remote Pro with backlighting, remote finder, and hands-free voice features.
* Better fit for a soundbar, receiver, surround system, Plex setup, or serious living-room installation.

**Cons**

* Costs more than the streaming sticks.
* Requires shelf space, a power outlet, and more visible cables.
* Overkill for a small secondary TV or someone who only needs Netflix, YouTube, and a few normal apps.
* Ethernet is useful, but the port is not gigabit—though it is still generally fast enough for normal 4K streaming.

# 5. Roku Streambar SE

The Streambar SE combines a small soundbar and Roku streaming player in one device.

**Pros**

* Improves weak built-in TV sound while adding Roku streaming.
* Compact, simple all-in-one solution.
* Good for a bedroom, office, dorm, kitchen, apartment, or secondary TV.
* Often improves dialogue clarity compared with thin TV speakers.

**Cons**

* It is not a replacement for a full soundbar, subwoofer, receiver, or surround system.
* Smaller audio drivers mean limited bass and room-filling sound.
* Fewer premium networking, video, and remote features than the Roku Ultra.
* More setup than a simple streaming stick because TV audio settings, HDMI ARC/eARC, or optical connections may come into play.

# 6. Roku Ultra LT

The Ultra LT is generally a retailer-specific, value-oriented premium Roku box.

**Pros**

* Can be a good deal if discounted below the standard Ultra.
* A better option than a basic stick for people who prefer a box-style Roku setup.
* Strong choice for a buyer who finds it at the right price and does not need every newest Ultra feature.

**Cons**

* It is not the same as the newest full Roku Ultra.
* Availability can be limited to certain retailers.
* Features can vary by exact model, so buyers should verify the box specifications before assuming it includes everything found on the current Ultra.
* It is often not worth buying if its sale price is close to the full Ultra.

# 7. Roku Streambar / Streambar Pro

These are larger Roku streaming soundbars intended for people who want to upgrade both their streaming and TV audio.

**Pros**

* Roku streaming is built directly into the soundbar.
* Better sound than TV speakers and generally fuller sound than the smaller Streambar SE.
* Cleaner setup than buying a separate streamer and separate soundbar.
* Can work well as the start of a Roku wireless audio setup with compatible speakers or a subwoofer.

**Cons**

* More expensive than a Roku stick.
* More cables and setup steps than a basic streamer.
* A separate Roku player plus a separate soundbar can be more flexible if you want to upgrade one piece later.
* Dedicated soundbars from audio-focused brands may offer better sound at certain price points.

# Simple buying advice

* **Older 1080p TV:** Roku Streaming Stick (HD).
* **Most 4K TVs with reliable Wi‑Fi:** Roku Streaming Stick Plus.
* **Most 4K TVs with weaker Wi‑Fi or Dolby Vision:** Roku Streaming Stick 4K.
* **Home theater, Ethernet, USB, premium remote, or fastest Roku:** Roku Ultra.
* **TV speakers are bad:** Roku Streambar SE for small rooms, or Streambar/ Streambar Pro for a larger audio upgrade.
* **Ultra LT:** Only if it is noticeably cheaper than the full Ultra and you have confirmed the exact model features.

# Third-party apps and sideloading

A common misconception is that Roku works like an Android TV box or Fire TV device. It does not.

Roku is a **closed platform**. You cannot normally download a random Android APK file, install an unofficial app from a USB drive, or sideload applications in the usual Android-style way. Roku devices primarily use channels from Roku’s official Channel Store.

Check to see if you are able to load the Smarters Player Lite app from their app store.
