Your 5 minutes can help save music creators: A proposal for fair background music attribution on YouTube

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a thought on a major issue that affects both music creators and everyday viewers on YouTube: Identifying background tracks.

The Current Situation:

We’ve all watched videos with great background music that we can't find because the uploader lowered the volume, added voiceovers/SFX over it, or used short clips. Automatic recognition tools like Shazam or Content ID often fail in these cases.

Uncredited usage deprives independent musicians of the recognition and fruit of their hard work, forcing many music fans to migrate to other platforms.

What Needs to Change:

To fix this, YouTube could introduce features in YouTube Studio like:

Manual Track Tagging: Allowing uploaders to easily tag any background music used.

Fair Enforcement: Implementing audio muting or monetization adjustments for videos that intentionally hide track details.

Dedicated Music Tag & Report Option: Giving viewers a clean player overlay and a way to flag incorrect track labels.

How We Can Make a Difference:

To bring this directly to the attention of YouTube's Product Team, a public petition has been set up on Change.org.

(Since direct external links can be restricted in post body, the link is provided in the comments section below. If you want to support this cause and be a part of this movement, please check the comments, sign, and share!)

A Note to the Community:

I gain absolutely zero personal benefit from this. You are 100% free to re-post, share, or take this idea and present it anywhere in your own words. This is solely about making sure hard-working music creators get the credit they deserve and improving the YouTube experience for everyone.

What are your thoughts on mandatory track tagging? Let's discuss below!
