Teaching in Texas as a non-native English speaker. What positions should I look for?

Jobs & Hiring

Hello everyone,

I’m from Argentina and worked as a literature teacher for 16 years in my country. A couple of years ago, I moved to Texas after meeting my husband and I got my bachelor’s degree in Spanish last year.

I thought finding a teaching job would be easy, considering I have 16 years of teaching experience and Texas has such a huge Latino population. But so far, I haven’t had much luck.

Districts have contacted me for interviews, but they don’t move forward with the hiring process. I’m starting to wonder if my English is part of the problem. When they hear me speak, maybe they don’t feel like I’m qualified to teach bilingual students. I can communicate just fine, but I’m obviously not a native English speaker, so I still make mistakes sometimes.

So far, I’ve only applied to elementary school positions, but now I’m wondering if I should be looking at high schools instead. Are there positions where I could teach Spanish literature?

I’m also currently working on getting my alternative teaching certification in Texas.

Has anyone here been in a similar situation or know what kinds of positions I should be looking for?
