Decrease in pay for nicer work location
Current employer is based downtown. I strongly dislike commuting and working downtown - the traffic, environment, scenery, office - everything is awful. I’ve been here for 7 years and go in 2-3x a week. It’s a 30 min commute. It’s an easy coasting job, but very toxic office politics and no upward mobility.
Something else to note - I live in an high risk earthquake zone area. The skyscraper I’m in is one of only a handful that has been flagged for risk of collapse during an earthquake due to a flaw in construction. It would be nearly impossible for me to evacuate timely due to office floor/logistics should something happen. I evacuated once from another company at a much lower floor and due to congestion it took nearly 1hr to leave. I estimate evacuation by stairway would be 2+ hours at my current company if not longer. This crosses my mind at least once a week and gives me some anxiety.
I’m casually starting to look at other employers in the area. There’s an area in the city that I absolutely love with a few companies in the field I work in. Peaceful, quiet, surrounded in nature. No skyscrapers, buildings are only 2 floors - just trees, grass, and views of the ocean. Easy parking, super safe, an amazing coffee shop. The commute is only 15 mins from where I live.
Problem is I’m compensated very well here and the new job options all pay ~10-20% less than what I currently make. Plus I would be taking a risk joining a new company. I’m torn between gritting my teeth for another year or jumping ship now. I’m 5-7 years out from FIRE and it feels like these are such crucial years for compound growth, avoiding risk, and max stacking.
