Is it normal to be left bed bound from a period

So I have PCOS (professionally diagnosed) and I quite often lose my period for months at a time before it randomly comes back with no warning. These periods are either short with very little bleeding or extremely heavy and intense to the point I'm left bed bound. I can't do anything except lay down on my side and even then I'm still in pain.

My doctor says this is a normal part of a flare up but I've been doing some research and it says it isn't, help?
