How to Make Progress on Reading
My five and a half year old just started kindergarten. We have done so much work with her over the years throughout preschool and pre-k last year to build the foundation for reading (alphabet, sounds & phonics, reading story books every night before bed since she was a baby. Now I’m trying to actually get her to make the shift to independently reading. It’s hard. She has a great memory, so a lot of the time she is just reciting books from memory. So I try to get new books frequently for her to practice with. She does ok with sounding things out for a little while, but quickly loses patience and starts guessing or gives up altogether.
What can I do here? I have two other young children, and I work full time, so I feel worried that maybe I’ve dropped the ball here. I want to foster a love for reading (and writing eventually) like I have, albeit I’m short on time these days.
