UK student visas for Indians are down 16% — but 82,523 Indians still got them. So what’s the real takeaway?
A lot of students and parents are reading the UK story in a very binary way.
Either:
- “The UK is finished” or
- “Nothing has changed”
But the official Home Office numbers suggest something more nuanced.
In the year ending June 2026:
- 383,455 sponsored study visas were granted overall
- 82,523 went to Indian students
- Indian numbers were down 16%
- 62% of students were going for master’s programmes
To me, this suggests the UK is not disappearing as an option.
It is becoming a more selective, more ROI-sensitive destination.
So the better question for 2027 applicants is not “Is the UK good or bad?”
It is: Who is the UK still right for?
My view:
- good for students wanting a 1-year master’s
- good when the university/course has clear employability value
- risky if the decision is based only on trend or social proof
What’s your read on this?
