Ring mechanics

I know that when one lantern dies the ring seeks out a "fearless" successor. But can the ring be stolen inter vivos and transfer ownership, without a test?

Or would the ring still seek out a "fearless" successor upon the death of the original owner?

Is there a biometric lock in the event of theft?
