I’m living with a very controlling parent and have no way out of their house just yet.
Before I start, I love my mother, always will because she is my mom and she provided for me blah blah blah. And hoping this post follows all the rules.
I don’t like asking advice from reddit but does anyone know how to handle my mother threatening to put a lock on the washing machine when she wants the door kept open?
I’m the only other person in this house who does my own separate loads of laundry (Mom and younger brother do their clothes at the same time). I did my laundry today and closed the washing machine door slowly to show my very jumpy dog that she has nothing to be afraid of and I forgot to open the door back up. Small mistake for me because the machine is in the bathroom I mainly use and I open the machine when it’s been closed by someone else so I would’ve just opened it back up. However, my mother caught my mistake before I did and she is now threatening to put a lock on the washing machine so I can’t use it. Which I find crazy, why would you put a lock on the door when it’s supposed to be kept open? You do the opposite, not lock it.
I made the mistake of reacting to her saying this instead of just apologizing for my mistake. Most of me doesn’t regret it because all jokes aside, I find this behavior to be somewhat of a mentally ill behavior that needs serious psychiatric treatment. But the rest of me feels guilty because I could’ve just pushed her to actually install a lock (she literally specified that it would be a physical lock WHICH MAKES NO SENSE TO ME).
What do I do from here since anything will set her off and give her that final push she needs?
