strength training / strength improvement for sailing (tallships/large boats especially)
Hi!
I love sailing though I am fairly new to it. I had sailed small boats before, but I spent this summer crewing a tallship and am now a deckhand on a large sailboat that does tourist sails in the city in which I live.
However, I am a very short woman (5'0) and have never really done activities that require strong arms before. I have good core strength and legs but useless noodle arms.
On the boat I work on now I am not strong enough to raise any of our sails by myself, and that is really holding me back as a crew member. Most of our deckhands are larger and stronger and can raise a sail on their own, and it makes me less useful as a sailor. Even the other sailors closer to my size are way stronger than me.
I was wondering what exercises any of you have used to improve the muscles, strength, and stamina required for sailing tasks specifically. I'm totally willing to hit the gym between sails but I've never strength trained before and don't know where to start, especially for a niche kind of goal like this.
Any thoughts?
