Is a laptop or tablet better for university/college if you own a gaming laptop but don't want to bring it?

General question

Hi! Sorry for the poorly worded title, I wasn't quite sure how to phrase it.

I'm an incoming university/college student majoring in psychology and biology, and I'm wondering whether or not I should get a laptop or a tablet for daily use. Let me preface this by saying that, in my specific situation, I already own a high-power gaming laptop, but because it is quite frankly overkill for the average class and not something I want to damage, I don't plan on bringing it with me unless I absolutely must. Plus, I'm commuting on public transportation, so while I don't really care much about weight, I would rather not carry around my gaming laptop which is heavy and has all of my important stuff on it.

With that, I'm here to ask whether or not a laptop or a tablet would be better to buy! I'm aware that this is the laptop community, so there might be some bias (lol), but honestly I want to hear what the best opinions would be. For the tablet, I'd be buying a keyboard and mouse to use with it, so it'd be functioning like a makeshift laptop for me, just more convenient. Of course, there are a lot of software that would be difficult to run on a tablet compared to a laptop. At the same time, a tablet is way cheaper and more convenient to carry around.

I'm NOT asking for device suggestions (hence why I didn't use the form), just whether or not a laptop or tablet would be better to use!

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm on my own for this stuff. Convenience and average performance are what matters most to be as I already own a gaming laptop, so model-specific price isn't something I'm focusing on at the moment. Any and all responses would be greatly appreciated, and if this is the wrong place to ask this sort of question, please let me know where I can! Thank you!
