Express Entry CRS confusion — dependent spouse showing 5 points for work experience before completing 1 year
Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can clarify a CRS/Express Entry situation for me.
I created and submitted my Express Entry application on August 31, 2026. I am the primary applicant, and my wife is my dependent spouse.
My wife started her current job in Canada on October 20, 2025, so she has not completed one full year of Canadian work experience yet. She will complete one year on October 20, 2026.
When I completed the Express Entry profile, the system asked about my wife’s current work experience. Since she is currently working, I entered the information truthfully. However, the system is now giving me 5 additional CRS points for my wife’s work experience, resulting in a CRS score of 531.
Without these 5 points from my wife’s work experience (and without using her CELPIP/IELTS results), I believe my CRS score should be 526.
I have read some articles and Reddit discussions suggesting that, for CRS purposes, a spouse may receive the 5 points for work experience before actually completing the full 12 months — potentially during the 11th month. I understand that this may be how the system is calculating the score, but my situation is a little more complicated.
My main concern is this:
During this period, my wife spent approximately two months in India, while she was still employed by her Canadian employer and was working remotely from India. Therefore, although she started the job on October 29, 2025, I am not sure whether those two months spent working from India should count toward the required one year of Canadian work experience.
If those two months outside Canada do NOT count, then she would actually complete one full year of eligible Canadian work experience only after working in Canada until approximately December 29, 2026.
So I am confused about the following:
-
Why is the Express Entry system giving me the 5 CRS points for my wife’s work experience already, even though she has not completed 12 months of eligible Canadian work experience?
-
If I receive an ITA based on the CRS score of 531, but I believe my actual score should be 526, can I accept the ITA and submit my application?
-
Could this be considered misrepresentation if the system itself calculated the additional 5 points, even though I entered my wife’s employment information truthfully?
-
If I wait until next month and create/update my profile again, will the system continue giving the 5 points even though she still hasn’t completed the required Canadian work experience?
-
How should I properly handle this situation? Should I remove/modify my wife’s work experience from the profile, or should I leave it as it is because she is currently employed?
-
Most importantly, does working remotely from India for a Canadian employer count toward the one year of Canadian work experience for CRS purposes, or would those two months need to be excluded?
I want to make sure everything is accurate and compliant before accepting an ITA. I definitely do not want to claim points that I am not actually entitled to.
If anyone has been in a similar situation or has reliable information from IRCC regarding how this is calculated, I would really appreciate your advice.
Timeline for clarity:
* Wife started Canadian employment: October 20, 2025
* Time worked remotely from India: approximately 2 months
* Express Entry profile/application submitted: Aug 31, 2026 (UTC was Sept 1)
* System-generated CRS score: 531
* CRS score I believe I should have without spouse work-experience points: 526
* Expected completion of 1 year of Canadian work experience after accounting for the time outside Canada: approximately December 27, 2026
Thank you in advance for any help!
