an AI detector falsely flagged my honest lab report, and I need advice on how to handle being accused without making it worse
I am a junior in mechanical engineering, and I wrote a lab report entirely myself, my own data, my own analysis, my own words, and an AI detector flagged it as likely AI-generated, and now I am being treated as a suspect, and I genuinely do not know how to handle this without making it worse, so I am asking for advice.
Here is the situation. These detectors are known to be unreliable and to flag human writing constantly, especially clear, formal, technical writing, which is exactly what a lab report is supposed to be. So I did the assignment honestly, wrote it properly, and got accused precisely because I wrote it well, and now the burden is on me to prove a negative, that my own writing came from my own head.
I have some evidence. My drafts, my version history, my notes, the messy in-between states that show the work developing, which an AI-generated report would not have.
What I do not know is the strategy. Do I go in calm and cooperative and just present the evidence, risking looking like I am scrambling to cover something. Do I push back on the detector's reliability, risking looking defensive and like I am attacking the process rather than answering the charge. Do I involve anyone, an advisor, a student advocate, or does escalating make me look guilty.
I am angry and scared and I do not want to handle it in a way that damages me more than the false accusation already has.
For anyone who has faced a false academic accusation, how did you actually handle it, and what would you do differently?
