Tip for Benchmade and others
Hey everybody!
I'm posting about this because I've had a 940-1 for years and no matter what I did if I wanted a smooth free swinging action it had to be a little loose at the pivot with a touch of play. At the same time, if I tightened it enough to remove the play, it wasn't smooth or free swinging. All the while it was always slightly off-centered.
Recently I got so fed up with it that I decided to take cheap bronze phosphorus washers from Amazon, polish them a bit with roughly 1,000. Maybe 1,200 grit sandpaper, and then I used two washers on each side of the pivot.
Sure enough, it worked perfectly. The action is nice and smooth and swings real easily, but at the same time it's perfectly centered. I couldn't believe it. It's literally a $10 fix for a knife that should have never had the problem in the first place.
I know people really don't like Benchmade right now because of their prices and what not. But if you're like me and you've got one sitting around that's 10 years old and you just don't carry it as much as you used to because it never really had that fit and finish that your other knives do- give this a try. It just might straighten things out for you like they did for me.
By the way, I got the idea while I was servicing a Spyderco tenacious that uses two washers as well.
