I scored women's safety separately for 32 places in India. 30 came out lower. Would like opinions from women who've travelled there solo.

#Discussion 💬

I've been scoring destinations in India on two separate measures. General
traveller safety, and separately how comfortable solo women tend to find
the place. 32 destinations.

The thing I didn't expect: in 30 of the 32 the women's score came out
lower. Not a single one came out higher.

Biggest gaps were Varanasi, Rishikesh, Pushkar and Delhi. All places with
heavy pilgrim or backpacker traffic, and all of them score perfectly
respectably on general safety. Rishikesh is 4.3 out of 5 generally and
4.0 for women. That's not dangerous. It's just consistently a bit worse
if you're a woman.

The only two with no gap at all were Coorg and Chikmagalur, both quiet
hill districts in Karnataka where most of the accommodation is homestays.
Make of that what you will.

Here's the part I'm genuinely unsure about, and it's why I'm posting.
I don't know whether that pattern says something about India or something
about how I score. If you go looking for a gap you will find one. I tried
to rate them independently but I'm one person, and "does this feel worse
for women" isn't a measurement, it's a judgement.

So, for anyone who's travelled solo in India as a woman: does that ring
true? Is Varanasi meaningfully harder than its general score suggests? Is
anywhere on that list the opposite of what you'd expect?

And if the framing itself is wrong, if splitting it into two numbers is a
bad idea and it should just be one score with context, I'd rather hear
that now than keep publishing it.
