In the demonstration, the system maps the user’s face to reference faces including Elon Musk, Robert Downey Jr., Leonardo DiCaprio, and Timothée Chalamet.

The project is designed to work directly with a live camera feed and can be used with platforms such as Zoom, Discord, and Twitch.

Its listed features include a mouth-mask option that preserves the original mouth movements for more accurate lip synchronization, as well as multi-face mapping for scenarios involving more than one person.

The technology could have applications in live performances, entertainment, virtual content creation, and other forms of real-time media.

At the same time, real-time face swapping raises important questions around consent, identity, impersonation, and the authenticity of online video. A convincing synthetic face can make it increasingly difficult to determine whether someone appearing on camera is actually who they claim to be.

As AI-generated video becomes faster and more realistic, real-time identity manipulation could become an increasingly important issue for platforms and creators.

A new face-swapping tool demonstrates how AI can transform a user’s appearance in real time while they continue moving, speaking, and interacting normally.
