Why Does Christianity Observe The Sabbath On Sunday?
So, basically just the title of this thread is what I'm asking.
Sabbath translates to, from what I understand, "to stop," "to cease," and similar such things. It seems like it could be easily understood to mean "to rest" in the form of stopping/ceasing/etc. from work.
In Jewish texts, G-d rests on the Seventh Day, which is generally understood to be Saturday. And since a day begins at sunset in Judaism, the Seventh Day technically begins on Friday at Sunset and lasts until the sunset on Saturday.
I've heard something about a 'Lord's Day' in Christianity to explain why Sunday is the day that Christianity chooses to rest on, but does the Christian Bible say that Sunday is the Seventh Day? Is Sunday the Day of Rest? Is Sunday the Sabbath Day? I don't think it is, but I don't know.
But I've heard 'the Lord's Day' used as an explanation for Sunday instead of Saturday, so I'm guessing that the explanation is needed for this particular change. But one of the Ten Commandments is to honor the Sabbath day and keep it holy (my apologies if I'm not perfectly quoting said commandment). Does the Christian Bible change this to "honor the Lord's Day and keep it holy?" Or does it keep the Sabbath day as it is in the Jewish Tanach?
I suppose I'm just confused by the possibility that Christianity holds Saturday to be the Seventh Day when G-d rested, and assuming the Ten Commandments are the same in Christianity as they are in Judaism, then is Christianity choosing to disobey that commandment and honor the Lord's day instead of the Sabbath day? Or does Christianity preach a different way of observing the Sababath day other than resting from worldly concerns in lieu of prayer and reflection?
This has always been a source of great confusion to me, and I suppose I find that confusion frustrating, and I apologize if that frustration has come across as offensive despite my not intending it as such. I'm just hoping to find a bit of clarity to help clear up this confusion that I've had rolling around in the back of my head for quite some time.
Thank you all for your time and patience. Wishing everyone all the very best~
