The easiest way to lose something important on moving day? Pack too well.

This sounds strange, but it happens.

When everything in an apartment is packed and ready to go, important personal items can accidentally become part of the move too.

Before movers arrive, create one clearly separated DO NOT PACK / DO NOT LOAD zone.

Keep these there:

  • passports, IDs and important documents
  • medications
  • keys to both homes
  • wallet, cash and jewelry
  • phone and chargers
  • laptop or anything you need for work immediately
  • pet essentials
  • anything you’ll need during the first night

And don’t just put these things in another cardboard box.

Use a suitcase, backpack, closet, bathroom, or ideally your own car — somewhere visually separate from everything being moved.

This matters even more with professional packing because a good packing crew works quickly. If an item looks like part of the household shipment, the natural assumption is that it should be packed.

One small trick we recommend at Dumbo Moving & Storage: physically separate what stays with you before the crew arrives instead of trying to remember it during the move.

Moving day already gives you enough things to think about.
